The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. Ekkehard Tichy was killed on 16 August 1944 after ramming a B-17 with his Fw 190 over Hannoversch Münden, Germany. He was posthumously awarded the Knights Cross on 14 January 1945 and promoted to Hauptmann.
